The Department of Ancient Acts was established on January 1, 1991.
According to the Regulations on the Department, its main tasks are:
- scientific and archaeographic development of funds and collections of microfilms taking into account further research in the field of special historical disciplines (14th-18th centuries) for the further development of the scientific reference apparatus (SRA) system of the archive;
- organization of the use, publication of archival documents and archaeographic materials;
- definition of the main directions and analysis of the archive’s work on the development of the scientific reference apparatus for the use of ancient acts, preparation of proposals for their improvement;
- study of advanced domestic and foreign experience in the field of creating NPOs and the use of automated archival technologies, its implementation in the practice of the department, archive.
In accordance with the assigned tasks, the Department:
- prepares proposals for projects of scientific programs, long-term and current plans for the archive’s work in specific areas of the department, ensures their implementation;
- prepares proposals on the main directions and topics of scientific research and methodological work of the archive in the field of creating a scientific reference apparatus, using and publishing ancient acts, prepares thematic publications, takes part in the development of topics for scientific research and methodological work. manuals on specific areas of the department, implements them in the practice of the department, archive;
- develops funds of ancient acts and collections of microfilms (compiles internal inventories of cases, geographical and personal indexes, terminological dictionaries) for the further development of the archival system of the NPO;
- carries out, jointly with archival, scientific and other institutions or independently, the development and preparation for publication of archival reference books (indexes, inventories, catalogs, etc.), including the use of automated technologies;
- conduct identification and registration of documents from the period of the 14th – early 20th centuries in archives, monasteries, churches of the country and abroad;
- provides consultations to archive employees, visitors to the reading room, etc., and also makes annotations to individual documents of the State Archival Fund;
- conduct research in the field of special historical disciplines (paleography, sphragistics, heraldry, filigree, etc.);
- organizes the preparation and holding of meetings, conferences, seminars in the specialized areas of the department, participates in the work of scientific and scientific-practical conferences, meetings, seminars and other events;
- in accordance with the established procedure, performs contract work, provides paid services to institutions and citizens in the specialized areas of the department;
- studies domestic and foreign archival research and archaeographic experience of working with ancient texts, implements it in the practice of the department, archive;
- conducts an economic analysis of the department’s work, analyzes the level of compliance with production standards in the department, prepares proposals based on the results of the analysis;
- develops standards for working with paleographic documents based on existing time and work standards for the main types of work;
- participates in the work of the Academic Council, Directorate and Expert and Methodological Commission of the archive, submits for consideration issues of developing archival work in specific areas of the department, prepares materials for discussion, monitors the implementation of decisions made.
